Supporting the Safety and Well-Being of Children, Families and Seniors
March is National Social Work Month
The Provincial Government recognizes March as National Social Work Month in order to highlight and observe the positive impact social workers have in communities throughout our province.
“I would like to thank all social workers during National Social Work
Month for their ongoing commitment and professionalism as they focus on
improving the safety and well-being of children, families and seniors across
our province and the rest of Canada. Each day our social workers not only
strengthen the lives of those they protect and support, but also the
communities in which we all live.”
- The Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services
In Newfoundland and Labrador, there are over 1,500 registered social workers practising in diverse settings including health, senior care, adult and youth corrections, child protection, adoptions, child care, addictions, mental health, community-based centres, government departments and universities, as well as private practices and consulting businesses.
“Social workers play an important role in the delivery of health care
throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, providing on-the-ground services in
our health centres, communities and directly to individuals and families. It
is important that we take the time to recognize their valuable work and
thank them for their tireless dedication to the people of our province.”
- The Honourable Susan Sullivan, Minister of Health and Community
Services
This year the theme for National Social Work Month is Social Workers: Promoting Equity for a Strong Canada. During the month of March, social workers will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities taking place throughout the province such as professional development sessions as well as networking and career events to promote the social work profession. In addition, social work students currently enrolled in their final year at Memorial University’s School of Social Work will have the opportunity to celebrate National Social Work Month during a meet and greet being held with Ministers Davis and Sullivan in mid-March.
The Government of Newfoundland Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
