Responsible Decisions Support Strong Communities and a Vibrant Economy

Contract with MV Norcon Galatea Imminent as Sea Trials Begin

A contract has been negotiated with the owners of the MV Norcon Galatea to provide support for the provincial ferry fleet during refit work. The Provincial Government expects the contract will be signed this week.

“Norcon has invested well over $1 million for a major overhaul of this vessel and is now in the final process of obtaining all regulatory certifications and licenses required by Transport Canada to operate as a ferry vessel.”
- The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Transportation and Works

Residents of Bell Island will benefit as the immediate need for the Galatea will be to join the MV Flanders across the tickle.

Since acquiring the Galatea, formerly the Hamilton Sound, Norcon has rebuilt the main engines and gearboxes, overhauled generators, installed a new forward ramp, new anchor and chains, new fire alarm system, new emergency evacuation system, upgraded all navigation equipment, upgraded safety equipment and made considerable upgrades to passenger areas.

“Our Norcon Marine team has invested considerable effort and energy to prepare the Galatea to deliver safe, reliable and sustainable service. We are both pleased and proud to offer support to the provincial ferry fleet.”
- Glenn Burry, President, Norcon Marine Services

Norcon advises the Galatea will soon be deployed to Portugal Cove to undertake training drills and sea trials. Once all certifications and licenses are obtained and official contract authorization is complete, the Galatea will be cleared for service and is expected to join the Flanders on the Bell Island run.

Through sound fiscal management and responsible decisions, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is strengthening the business environment, encouraging the development of innovative industries and building a vibrant economy.
