Full Steam Ahead on TLH with $38 Million in Recent Tender Contracts
The Department of Transportation and Works has awarded two contracts
totalling more than $38 million as work gets underway to prepare for paving
of Phases II and III of the Trans Labrador Highway (TLH).
“Construction crews are busy along all three phases of the TLH, as we
continue to deliver on our promise to the people of Labrador,” said the
Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Transportation and Works. “With the last
full season of paving on Phase I in progress, we are very excited to be
investing $38 million to see significant progress being made on Phases II
and III.”
Two project contracts were recently awarded to Mike Kelly & Sons Ltd. and
include widening and upgrading of 80 kilometres on Route 510 from Red Bay to
Lodge Bay with a contract value of $22.5 million; and widening and upgrading
of 80 kilometres on Route 510 from Happy Valley-Goose Bay towards Cartwright
with a contract value of $15.7 million.
“This highway is one of the largest infrastructure projects in our
province’s history,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister Responsible
for Labrador Affairs. “Spanning close to 1,200 kilometres and navigating
some of the most remote land in our country, the TLH represents immense
investment and provincial pride.”
Paving crews continue to make significant progress on Route 500 of the TLH,
from Labrador West to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, with the paving of the full
530 kilometres of Phase I on schedule for completion in the summer of 2014.
“The TLH is a vital link for us in Labrador and as paving continues, we see
an enhanced transportation system providing significant benefit to all those
who have access to it,” said Keith Russell, MHA for Lake Melville. “I am
proud to be a part of a government that is responsive to the needs of
Labrador residents.”
In January 2013, the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador
announced a joint investment of over $85 million to begin widening and
paving Phases II and III of the Trans Labrador Highway. Budget 2013 includes
an infrastructure investment of over $866 million to encourage economic
growth, job creation and stronger communities.
