Housing Renovations Completed on the Northeast Avalon

Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation (NLHC) continues to modernize and improve social housing with the completion of roof replacements on an eight-unit building on Montague Street in St. John’s, and the installation of new ventilation systems for eight properties located on Farrell Drive in Mount Pearl.

“The Provincial Government has invested approximately $105 million the over the last ten years to upgrade social housing properties throughout Newfoundland and Labrador,” said the Honourable Paul Davis, Minister Responsible for NLHC. “Seventy per cent of rental properties across the province have already been upgraded, and these renovations in the Northeast Avalon help advance our effort to upgrade all 5,572 NLHC units.”

These two renovation contracts, valued at $73,000, have been completed by Newfoundland Roofing Ltd. and Eastern Siding Systems Inc. These renovations support the commitments in the Provincial Government’s action plans focused on climate change and energy efficiency, Charting Our Course: Climate Change Action Plan 2011, and Moving Forward: Energy Efficiency Action Plan 2011.

“All renovations and improvements are vital to ensuring that affordable social housing will continue to be available in our communities to help individuals and families in housing need,” said Steve Kent, MHA for Mount Pearl North. “The work accomplished by NLHC over the past few years alone is quite remarkable, and we are very pleased with their progress.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $10 million to support the NLHC Modernization and Improvement Program.
