Tender Called to Continue Improvements on Trans Labrador Highway
The Provincial Government continues to build on its long-term commitment to Labrador with a tender call today to begin widening and upgrading Phase III of the Trans Labrador Highway. Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides over $43 million to complete the last full season of paving on Phase I, and commence upgrading sections of Phase II and III.
“We are moving full steam ahead with the Trans Labrador Highway, a key transportation link and significant long-term infrastructure investment by our government,” said the Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Transportation and Works. “This latest tender call includes upgrading along Phase III and is another important step forward in reaching our ultimate goal of having in place a fully-paved highway right across Labrador.”
The tender includes clearing the right of way, widening to a 12.5 metre driving surface, undertaking culvert extensions, and repositioning signs and guardrails. Work will begin at the intersection of Route 500 and Route 510, near Happy Valley-Goose Bay, moving south over a distance of 80 kilometres towards the Cartwright Junction.
“Labrador is poised for massive economic growth and our investments in the Trans Labrador Highway will support the region and the exciting opportunities that lie ahead,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Service NL and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. “We continue to focus on the needs of Labradorians to ensure a prosperous and secure future for generations to come.”
In January, the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador announced a joint investment of over $85 million to begin widening and paving Phases II and III of the Trans Labrador Highway. Budget 2013 includes an infrastructure investment of over $866 million to encourage economic growth, job creation and stronger communities.
