Tender Called to Begin Work to Replace the Sir Robert Bond Bridge

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes over $12 million for the construction of a replacement for the Sir Robert Bond Bridge in central Newfoundland.

The first stage of this project is getting underway with a tender call to begin realigning and widening road approaches on both sides of the highway leading to and from the location of the new bridge.

“Our government has a sound plan to build on the province’s core infrastructure and advance needed improvements to strengthen the overall transportation network well into the future,” said the Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Transportation and Works. “The replacement of the Sir Robert Bond Bridge is a major Trans Canada Highway project, and another example of our government making responsible decisions to invest in our towns and communities over the long term to ensure lasting benefits for people and business.”

Budget 2013 focuses on the province’s long-term prosperity with an infrastructure investment of over $866 million to encourage economic growth, job creation and stronger communities. Infrastructure investments are being made in all regions of the province in key areas such as roads, marine services, health, education, municipal works, buildings, and aquaculture. It will generate 5,330 person years of employment.

“This is good news for the people of the area and indeed the travelling public in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Clayton Forsey, MHA for Exploits. “The new bridge is a major asset for the region, and I am pleased to see our government move this project forward.”

This project is supported through the joint federal-provincial Canada Strategic Infrastructure Fund.
