First Tender Called for Trans Labrador Highway Phase II Completion
The Government of Newfoundland Labrador is moving forward with work to meet its commitment to complete the Trans Labrador Highway. A tender was called today to widen Phase II from Red Bay to Lodge Bay.
“The Trans Labrador Highway is an infrastructure priority for our government, and advancing an early tender call for this work helps to meet this goal,” said the Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Transportation and Works. “We are on schedule to complete Phase I, and I am pleased to see work for upgrading Phase II proceed as it strengthens this important transportation route across the north.”
This work includes clearing the right of way, widening to a 12.5 meter driving surface, culvert extensions, and improvements to the road alignment to address areas that experience severe snow drifting.
“Since the opening of Phase III in 2009, the Trans Labrador Highway has eased the movement of people and goods throughout Labrador and provided a foundation for future growth and opportunity,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Service NL and Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs. “The road work planned for Red Bay to Lodge Bay will bring economic benefits and provide better connections for individuals, businesses and communities throughout the entire region.”
In January, the Governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador announced a joint investment of $85,057,332 to begin widening and paving Phases II and III of the Trans Labrador Highway between Red Bay and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. It is estimated that this investment will see approximately 200 kilometres widened and paved.
