Cleanup Efforts Continue Following Intense Winter Storm

The Provincial Government is continuing efforts to assist residents in returning to normal operations following the intense winter storm system which passed over portions of Newfoundland and Labrador this week.

Department of Transportation and Works crews continue to be out in full force today clearing highways and managing ice control throughout impacted regions. Environment Canada estimates between 25 and 60 centimetres of snow fell in the central and eastern regions, which combined with high winds to create significant drifting in open areas. Roads impacted by the storm remain snow covered, wet with water build up and slippery. Heavy snow and slush are present and open areas remain prone to whiteout conditions. Crews will remain busy over the next several days to complete clearing and to return for widening operations. Anyone having to travel is advised to use care and caution, as crews continue to work.

"Provincial Government snow clearing crews work diligently to keep main thoroughfares clear for emergencies, and I would like to thank all workers for their dedication and long hours over the past two days," said the Honourable Paul Davis, Minister of Transportation and Works. "I would like to also thank the citizens affected by this blizzard, as they settled at home, staying off the roads and highways. Their patience allowed crews to work safely throughout the day and night."

Utility providers Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro, Newfoundland Power, and Bell Aliant have been working diligently to return services to residents impacted by interruptions and are providing the public and government with regular status updates. Numerous utility crews have also been out addressing issues during and directly following the storm. The Provincial Government continues to urge everyone to remain as safe as possible during the cleanup and contact local emergency services if necessary for assistance.

"As snow clearing crews and utility providers continue to make repairs and improvements following the storm system, we urge people to be patient and keep safety in mind," said the Honourable Kevin O'Brien, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Minister Responsible for Fire and Emergency Services. "The Provincial Government continues to work with our internal departments and emergency management partners to ensure the safety and security of residents. Everyone needs to do their part to manage their personal safety and we commend those who heeded warnings and prepared themselves to manage the storm and its aftermath."
