The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Holding Four Provincial Girls Volleyball Tournaments This Weekend

Four Provincial Girls Volleyball Teams will be declared champions this weekend.

Ten teams will be competing in the Girls A Volleyball tournament, which is being hosted by Christ the King School in Rushoon. Competing in Division A will be John Watkins Academy (Hermitage), William Gillett Academy (Charlottetown), Gill Memorial (Musgrave Hr), Holy Name of Mary Academy (Lawn) and Main River Academy (Pollard’s Point). Teams in Division B include the host, Christ the King School, Eric G. Lambert School (Churchill Falls), Bishop White All Grade (Port Rexton), Jakeman All Grade (Trout River) and, St. James All Grade (Lark Harbour). Games will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday and will continue all day. Play begins again at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning. Cross over games will being at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday followed by the championship game.

Eight teams are registered for the Girls 2A Volleyball tournament being hosted by Cape John Collegiate in LaScie. Division A teams include Cloud River Academy (Roddickton), Labrador Straits Academy (L’Anse Au Loup), King Academy (Harbour Breton) and Random Island Academy. Competing in Division B will be the host, Cape John Collegiate, Lakewood Academy (Glenwood), Belanger Memorial (Doyles) and Tricentia Academy (Arnolds Cove). Play beings on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. Play will continue again at 9:00 a.m. Friday and will continue all day followed by the banquet and social event. Cross over games will being at 9:00 a.m. Saturday followed by the championship game.

Eight teams will also be competing in the Provincial Girls 3A Volleyball being hosted by Heritage Collegiate in Lethbridge. Competing in Division A will be the host, Heritage Collegiate, Baccalieu Collegiate (Old Perlican), Roncalli Central High (Avondale) and Pasadena Academy. Playing in Division B are St., Michael’s High (Bell Island), Leo Burke Academy (Bishop Falls), Templeton Academy (Meadows) and Pearson Academy (Wesleyville). Play will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Friday morning and continuing all day. Play resumes on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. concluding with the crossover games and championship game.

The 4A Girls Volleyball tournament is being hosted by Holy Spirit High in Manuels. Twelve teams will be competing in four divisions being played at Holy Spirit and O’Donel High (Mount Pearl) gyms. Division 1 teams include Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Foxtrap), O’Donel High (Mount Pearl) and Clarenville High.

Division 2 schools include the host, Holy Spirit High, Gander Collegiate and Corner Brook Regional High. Division 3 will include Holy Heart of Mary (St. John’s) Mount Pearl Senior High, Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Happy Valley-Goose Bay). Division 4 will see action from Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) Holy Trinity Regional High (Torbay) and Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts). Opening ceremonies will be held at the Holy Spirit High Gym at 11:00 a.m. on Friday. Games will begin at both venues on Friday at 12:30 p.m. and will continue all day followed by the banquet at 6:45 p.m. at Holy Spirit High. Play will begin again at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday concluding with the championship game.

In addition to the gold and silver SSNL medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. SSNL believes strongly in the values and principles of Sportsmanship.  In recognition of this, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams and coaches vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship, as well.  This team is awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
