Provincial Government Highlights Latest Achievement of Local Author

The Provincial Government recognizes the contributions of the province’s cultural community, and today highlighted acclaimed local author Lisa Moore on being named to the 2013 Giller Literary Award Short List for her latest novel, Caught. The Scotiabank Giller Prize is the most prestigious literary award presented in Canadian fiction.

“I commend Ms. Moore on being named a finalist for this esteemed literary award,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Her work, and the work of all our province’s outstanding writers, continues to grow and promote Newfoundland and Labrador’s prominent literary sector. I wish Ms. Moore much success.”

Lisa Moore was previously nominated for the Giller Prize in 2002 for her short story collection Open and again in 2005 for her novel Alligator. Ms. Moore was named to the long list alongside fellow Newfoundland and Labrador writers Elisabeth de Mariaffi, Wayne Johnson and Michael Winter. This was the first time four of the 13 long-list finalists were writers from the province.

Along with Lisa Moore, the following four authors from across the country were named finalists for the 2013 Giller Prize: Dennis Bock for Going Home Again; Lynn Coady for Hellgoing; Craig Davidson for Cataract City and Dan Vyleta for The Crooked Maid.

The prize awards $50,000 to the author of the best Canadian novel or short story collection published in English, and $5,000 to each of the finalists. Founded in 1994, the Giller Prize was named in honour of the late literary journalist Doris Giller. The 2013 winner will be announced on November 5.

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides more than $17 million to support cultural and heritage sectors. Since the launch of Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture in 2006, the Provincial Government has invested $87 million through the plan to promote culture and heritage in the province.
