Beach Volleyball Court Coming to Town of Summerford
Fun in the sun will have new meaning in the Town of Summerford with the construction of a sand volleyball court. The new court will be funded in part by a $15,000 grant provided through the Provincial Government’s Community Capital Grants Program. Construction is now underway and the court will be open for use within a month.
“The development of a sand volleyball court was suggested through survey feedback from the local school and parents to improve opportunities for fun physical activity,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “As a government, we are pleased to support this project, as it will provide residents of the community and surrounding areas another outlet to participate in an enjoyable outdoor physical activity.”
The Community Youth Network - Isles of Notre Dame Corporation is among the many community-based organizations, municipalities, schools, and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest capital grant program investments.
“I am pleased to see continued investment in recreational infrastructure for the New World Island region,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture and MHA for the Isles of Notre Dame. “Supporting volunteers and providing opportunities for participation in sport and recreation is important for the health and well-being of our residents.”
Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $7.7 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador: A Recreation and Sport Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007, approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
