New Tot Lot Encourages Physical Activity Among Children

Encouraging children at an early age to participate in physical activity is a priority for the Provincial Government, and a $15,000 grant provided through the Capital Grant Program will assist with the construction of a new tot lot in the Town of Bay Bulls.

“We welcome any opportunity to get our province’s children and youth enjoying the outdoors and being physically active,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The $15,000 grant under our Capital Grant Program will help offset the cost of purchasing fencing, a new swing set, a small tree house and other items for the new play area.”

The Sheldon Drive and Area Children’s Activity Committee (Town of Bay Bulls) is among the many community-based organizations, municipalities, schools and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest capital grant program investments.

“This investment will help in allowing children in the Town of Bay Bulls and, more specifically Sheldon Drive, to have access to a safe recreational area,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister of Innovation Business and Rural Development and MHA for Ferryland. “I congratulate the volunteers such as the Sheldon Drive and Area Children’s Activity Committee on working with government to move forward initiatives of importance. As Minister Responsible for the Volunteer and Non-Profit sector, I applaud all volunteers for all the unselfish time and effort they provide to our communities.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $7.7 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador: A Recreation and Sport Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007, approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
