Capital Grant Helps Ensure Upgrades to Labrador West Rowing Facility

The Labrador West Rowing Association has been allocated $13,000 from the Community Capital Grants Program to assist with improvements and repairs to its rowing facility.

“Our government understands that projects like this are essential components of the physical, recreational and social activities in a community, and we are delighted to support such endeavours,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The funding of $13,000 for the Labrador West Rowing Association will assist with initiatives such as the replacement of a safety boat slipway and the boathouse floor, as well as the development of a storage area. These improvements will help ensure the facility is available for ongoing use by residents.”

The Labrador West Rowing Association is among more than 20 community projects which have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through the Provincial Government’s Community Capital Grants Program.

“The Labrador West Rowing Association and the annual regatta are core recreational components of the area, and I am pleased this support will help maintain and improve the association’s presence in the area,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister Responsible for Labrador Affairs and MHA for Labrador West. “This project is needed to sustain operations at the regatta site in a safe and effective manner for everyone involved.”

The Community Capital Grant Program is an application-based program that provides grants of up to $15,000 to assist community-based recreation organizations to improve their recreation and sports infrastructure.

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $7.7 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the provincial sport and recreation strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
