Special Olympic Runner Wins a Bronze Medal at
the 2013 Canada Summer Games

This is the second medal win for Team Newfoundland and Labrador, and the first for Chris Dugas, who today won a bronze medal in the Special Olympics men’s 200-metres at the 2013 Canada Summer Games.

“Reaching the podium at a Canada Games is a tremendous accomplishment,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “I congratulate Chris on his incredible medal performance. I have no doubt it will be one he will remember for many years to come.”

Chris Dugas is from Kippens and has been a member of the Bay St. George Special Olympics Club for five years. This is Mr. Dugas’ second time participating in the Canada Games. In 2010, he participated in the Special Olympic National Summer Games as well as the National Winter Games in 2012. At the 2011 and 2012 Summer Olympics Provincial Summer Games, he won four gold and five gold medals respectively. Most recently, Mr. Dugas was named Stephenville’s Athlete of the Year.

During the first week of the Games, swimmer Owen Daly won a silver medal in the men’s 50-metre butterfly.

The Canada Games were established in 1967 and Newfoundland and Labrador has been represented at every event since. The games are held every two years, alternating summer and winter. The province hosted the 1977 Canada Summer Games in St. John's and the 1999 Canada Winter Games in Corner Brook. The 2013 Canada Summer Games are being held in Sherbrooke, Quebec from August 2-17.
