Minister Offers Condolences on Paul O'Neill's Passing

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today offered his condolences on the passing of renowned writer, actor, historian and community activist Paul O'Neill.

“The cultural community of our province has witnessed a tremendous loss with the passing of Paul O'Neill, and I wish to offer my heartfelt condolences to his family,” said Minister French. “For many years, Mr. O'Neill was an icon in our cultural sector, and made many contributions as a writer, historian and actor, as well as serving on various arts organizations. His presence will certainly be missed among the cultural community he served well during his lifetime.”

Mr. O'Neill was educated at St. Bonaventure's College in St. John's and the National Academy of Theatre Arts at New York. Along with his numerous acting experiences, he began a career in radio in the 1950s with the CBC in the province where he produced many radio shows, as well as TV shows such as Reach for the Top. Mr. O'Neill also wrote numerous plays, stories, articles, poems and historical works, and served as founding president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Writer's Guild and chair of the Newfoundland and Labrador Arts Council. He was also appointed to the Order of Canada and a recipient of the Order of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Undoubtedly, Mr. O'Neill's passing will be felt among the arts community for years to come,” said Minister French. “His memory and spirit will be kept alive through his many works that are an important part of our cultural repertoire.”
