Province’s Heritage Tourism Attractions Supported Through Provincial Government Funding

Heritage tourism attractions are important economic generators in rural areas of the province, and the Provincial Government is supporting a number of these sites through its Heritage Tourism Anchor Attractions Program. More than $65,000 will help ensure heritage tourism organizations like the Sir William Ford Coaker Heritage Foundation and Battle Harbour Historic Trust continue to preserve and promote the heritage of the areas they serve.

“There are a number of societies and organizations throughout our province which are considered heritage tourism anchor attractions and help draw resident and non-resident visitors alike to learn of the history and culture of the area in which they are located,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “We are pleased to provide over $65,000 to support these organizations and the valuable work they do in telling the unique story of our history.”

Minister French was at the Lester-Garland House in Trinity today to provide the Trinity Historical Society with a $7,620 grant under the program to help with it’s operations. The Trinity Historical Society was organized in 1966 to gather information on the history of Trinity and preserve it for future generations.

“The Trinity area is home to a myriad of heritage tourism attractions which help articulate the rich history of this region of the province,” said the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Speaker of the House of Assembly and MHA for Trinity North. “I am delighted that funding to organizations such as the Trinity Historical Society will help continue their work of protecting and promoting the valuable properties and archives which hold such cultural significance.”

In addition to housing the main collection of the Trinity Historical Society Archives, the Trinity Historical Society owns and operates the Lester-Garland House; Trinity Museum; Green Family Forge; The Cooperage; Court House, Gaol and General Building; and Fort Point Military Site.

“The history of the Town of Trinity as a migratory fishing station and as the major centre of trade on the northeast coast of the island is extremely important,” said Ian White, President, Trinity Historical Society. “Today, many structures of historic significance have been preserved and restored to provide a setting to demonstrate the heritage of the area, and we are delighted with funding from the Provincial Government to help continue these operations.”

A complete list of organizations receiving funding under the Heritage Tourism Anchor Attractions portion of the Cultural Economic Development Program can be found in the backgrounder below.

Since the launch of Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture in 2006, the Provincial Government has invested $87 million through the plan to promote culture and heritage in the province.

BACKGROUNDER

Cultural Economic Development Program (Heritage Tourism Anchor Attractions)

The Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation provides annual operational support to community heritage organizations in the province under the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP), including museums, archives and heritage societies. Since 2011, additional support has been provided to heritage organizations that are considered heritage tourism anchor attractions in their communities. The annual funding, in addition to CEDP Operational support, is provided to groups that meet eligibility requirements. It is provided in recognition of the responsibilities and costs that the managers of these attractions assume and the role that they play as regional economic generators in their rural communities. Funding is calculated as a percentage of an organization’s current CEDP operating grant.
