Funding for the Arts Takes Centre Stage

The importance of the creative endeavours of the arts community was centre stage at the LSPU Hall today when the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced $315,000 in annual cultural sector support, provided through the Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

“As a government, we are pleased to see the $315,000 announced today go directly to our arts community,” said Minister French. “Newfoundland and Labrador is home to a host of gifted artists, many of whom have made their mark not only locally, but across the country and throughout the world as well. Our province boasts an incredible amount of cultural activity, and we want to ensure that activity remains strong for many years to come.”

Today’s announcement included $100,000 for the Resource Centre for the Arts. A list of the additional organizations receiving funding announced today can be found in the backgrounder below.

“Without the continued support from all three levels of government, and in particular the strong provincial contribution through CEDP, Resource Centre for the Arts would simply cease to be as it is,” said Neil Butler, Board Chair, Resource Centre for the Arts. “The funding provided at such high levels to our organization is the basis of our ability to allow artists and community groups to use ‘The Hall’ for their work at a reduced rate. Fortunately our partners in the Provincial Government recognize the importance of the ‘on-the-ground’ work we do in contributing as much as we can to the strength and vitality of this beautiful province's culture. Again, this funding is absolutely essential.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides more than $17 million to support cultural and heritage sectors. Since the launch of Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture in 2006, the Provincial Government has invested $87 million through the plan to promote culture and heritage in the province.
