Nickel Independent Film Festival Showcases the Province’s Vibrant Film Industry

Local, national and international filmmakers will bring their work to the big screen beginning this evening, when the Nickel Independent Film Festival gets underway. The 13th annual film festival, which runs June 18-22, will celebrate independent film creation with the screening of 47 films.

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, will attend this evening’s opening, taking place at the LSPU Hall, beginning at 8:00 p.m.

"The Nickel Independent Film Festival continues to provide an important venue for local filmmakers to showcase their work,” said Minister French. "The film industry is a significant part of the cultural product we have to offer in Newfoundland and Labrador, and this festival is a major vehicle for its promotion.”

The Provincial Government has provided $14,000 in operational support to the Nickel Independent Film Festival through the Cultural Economic Development Program.

“The Nickel gratefully acknowledges the generous support under the Cultural Economic Development Program,” said Janelle Hickey, Executive Director of the Nickel Independent Film Festival. “Such support will mean that the Nickel will be able to pay higher artist’s fees, continue the development of the festival, and increase audience development initiatives. With the CEDP’s valuable assistance, we can continue to grow and take on new initiatives to increase opportunities for filmmakers and audiences in Newfoundland and Labrador.”
