Archaeology Blog Helps Residents Dig Deep Into Their Past

An award-winning archaeology blog is helping Newfoundlanders and Labradorians understand current and past archaeology in the province. Developed by Stephen Hull of the Provincial Archaeology Office, Inside Newfoundland and Labrador Archaeology recently received the Canadian Archaeological Association’s 2013 Public Communications Award.

“The blog posts on Inside Newfoundland and Labrador Archaeology offer a unique insight into archaeology in our province that may not be known by our residents, but certainly has shaped who we are today as a people,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “I want to congratulate Stephen Hull on his award, as this is a true recognition by his peers of the valuable work that is being done here in Newfoundland and Labrador to preserve our past.”

Inside Newfoundland and Labrador Archaeology provides education and access to documents written by archaeologists dealing with numerous archaeology sites throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. The blog contains regular discussions on a variety of archaeological projects, both current and former, and has a dedicated following. The blog can be found at nlarchaeology.wordpress.com .

“This outreach effort has brought Newfoundland and Labrador archaeology to many homes throughout our province and our country,” said Minister French. “The blog complements the great work being done by our Provincial Archaeology Office which plays a tremendous role in preserving our heritage. Their work spans a number of sectors, including tourism, energy, mineral exploration, and academia, and they were recently recognized with a Public Service Award of Excellence by the Provincial Government.”

The Provincial Archaeology Office, Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, is the regulatory agency for all archaeology conducted within the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is responsible for archaeological site management and protection; archaeological permitting; review of land use applications; development of policy and procedures; consultations with groups having archaeological interests; and education.
