Nominations Sought for Provincial Historic Commemorations Program

The Provincial Historic Commemorations Program is currently accepting applications from individuals, groups and community organizations who wish to nominate people, places, traditions or events of provincial significance. Applications will be accepted until July 15, 2013.

“This program is a wonderful way to highlight and recognize the important role numerous people, places, events and traditions have played in the history of our province,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “I encourage citizens and organizations to take this opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate our incredible heritage.”

Established in 2008, the Provincial Historic Commemorations Program was among the objectives outlined in the Provincial Government’s cultural strategy, Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture (2006).

“The Provincial Historic Commemorations Program is now in its fifth year and we’ve had some excellent nominations to date, but we’d love to see more,” said Françoise Enguehard, Chair of the Provincial Historic Commemorations Board. “We encourage everyone in the province to nominate the people, places, events and traditions that they think are significant. Anyone can nominate something that they feel is important.”

Nominations will be accepted from individuals, communities and organizations in the following categories: Place of Provincial Significance, Event of Provincial Significance, Tradition Bearer, Distinctive Cultural Traditions and Practices, and Person of Provincial Significance.
