Anchors Aweigh for Tourism Awareness Week
With the launch of Ocean Quest’s newest tour boat, Mermaid, the
Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation also
launched Tourism Awareness Week 2013 today at the Foxtrap Marina in
Conception Bay South. Tourism Awareness Week, June 10 to 16, is a national
initiative highlighting the contribution tourism makes both economically and
socially to each region of the country.
“I was delighted to be part of the official launch of Ocean Quest’s newest
tour boat and kick start Tourism Awareness Week 2013 in our province,” said
Minister French. “Tourism operators such as Ocean Quest play a significant
role in our tourism industry, and it is fitting we use this occasion to also
launch tourism week activities. Through years of partnership between the
industry and the Provincial Government, we have turned the industry into a
powerhouse for the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Throughout the week, Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador, destination
management organizations, businesses and other partners will organize and
engage in a variety of regional and provincial activities and events that
showcase the economic impact and social benefits of the tourism sector.
“Tourism Week is a time to trumpet the success of the tourism and travel
industry in Newfoundland and Labrador,” said Darlene Thomas, Chair of
Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador. “Tourism is one of the most stable
revenue-generating industries in our provincial economy, offering steady
long-term growth and tremendous future potential. Thanks to the hard work
and innovation of tourism stakeholders across our province like Rick Stanley
at Ocean Quest investing in businesses and communities, we are building a
strong industry that will serve Newfoundland and Labrador well into the
future.”
Between 2009 and 2012, non-resident visitation in Newfoundland and Labrador
increased 21 per cent and surpassed a milestone of half a million visitors.
In 2012, tourism spending reached $1 billion, the highest level ever
attained in the province.
“We are clearly in the best position we have ever been as an industry,” said
Minister French. “Our brand is stronger than ever, and our tourism marketing
campaign has become one of the most recognizable advertising campaigns in
the country. To date, it has earned more than 180 national and international
awards. Along with industry stakeholders, we will continue to build upon the
momentum in the industry.”
Since 2006, the Provincial Government has invested approximately $94 million
in tourism marketing in Newfoundland and Labrador.
