2014 Winter Games Projects Supported by Provincial Government

The 2014 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games, being held in Clarenville from March 1 to March 9, 2014, received $25,000 in support today from the Provincial Government for various capital projects associated with the games. The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, along with the Honourable Ross Wiseman, Speaker of the House of Assembly and MHA for Trinity North, were in Clarenville for the announcement.

“Our government is committed to advancing the sports and recreation agenda in our province, and the Newfoundland and Labrador Games are an important event within the sports community,” said Minister French. “We are pleased to provide $25,000 for various upgrades that are necessary to ensure the success of the 2014 Winter Games in Clarenville.”

The Newfoundland and Labrador Games are held every two years, alternating summer and winter. It is anticipated that more than 1,500 athletes, officials and coaches will participate in the 2014 Winter Games in Clarenville.

“It is an honour to be the host community for the 2014 Winter Games, and this funding will allow for a number of projects to help ensure we deliver a quality product,” said Speaker Wiseman. “There are numerous benefits associated with hosting these games, not only for the many athletes, coaches, managers and volunteers involved, but for the town and neighbouring communities as well.”

In 2012, the Provincial Government announced $350,000 for the 2014 Games, including $150,000 for travel costs for athletes, coaches, and managers. Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy Active, Healthy, Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007, approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province, including investments in arenas and other athletic facilities.
