Investment Works to Preserve and Protect Province’s Heritage

Vibrant, unique and diverse all describe the culture and history of Newfoundland and Labrador, and the Provincial Government will help 121 organizations preserve the province’s heritage this year with an investment of more than $876,000 through the Provincial Government’s Cultural Economic Development Program (CEDP).

“Our history is full of stories of great achievements, overcoming adversity, and coming together as families and communities, and our investment in heritage helps to preserve these stories so they can be passed on to the next generation,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Our government’s commitment of over $876,000 will help maintain archives, museums, historic sites and heritage societies throughout the province that will benefit generations to come.”

As part of the over $876,000 distributed this year, Minister French was at the Presentation Convent today to provide the Presentation Sisters with a $3,630 grant to maintain their archives. The Presentation Sisters came to Newfoundland in 1833 to establish a school that would offer improved educational opportunities for young women in St. John’s. This year, the organization is celebrating 180 years of service to the community, and its achievements and history will continue to be preserved through the CEDP funding.

“We are very pleased to receive this funding, as it will help us maintain our archives on the important occasion of our 180th anniversary,” said Sister Whittle, member of the Presentation Sisters congregation. “Our organization has a long and proud history, and we thank the Provincial Government for helping us maintain and share it.”

A complete list of organizations receiving funding under the Cultural Development Economic Program can be found in the backgrounder below.

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides more than $11 million to support heritage preservation. Since the launch of Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture in 2006, the Provincial Government has invested $87 million through the plan to promote culture and heritage in the province.
