Applications Available for Capital and Physical Equipment Grants

Applications for both the Community Capital Grants and Physical Activity Equipment programs are now available to communities and other organizations for 2013-14. Administered by the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, these programs provide financial support for recreation and sport infrastructure and equipment needs throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Recreation and sport are valuable components of community living, and having the appropriate infrastructure and equipment is necessary for participation in such activities,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “These programs provide the necessary assistance to help ensure access to physical activity throughout our province, and complement the goals of our 2007 recreation and sport strategy Active, Healthy, Newfoundland and Labrador.”

The Community Capital Grant Program assists communities in the development of small-scale indoor or outdoor capital recreation projects such as playgrounds, trails and multi-purpose courts, up to a maximum of $15,000. The Physical Activity Equipment Program is available to support the purchase and repair of equipment that promotes physical activity such as nets, sticks and balls for recreation participation in after-school programs; sit-skis or similar para-ski equipment adaptations; and, mats exercise balls and weights for fitness programs, up to a maximum of $3,000.

The deadline to submit applications to both the Community Capital Grants and Physical Activity Equipment programs is March 1, 2014. Program guidelines and application forms are available on the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation’s website at: www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/sports/index.html

Since the launch of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy Active, Healthy, Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007, approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province, including investments in arenas and other athletic facilities.
