Minister Congratulates Winners of 2013 Arts and Letters Awards

More than $47,000 was presented to the winners of the 2013 Arts and Letters Awards this past weekend at The Rooms in St. John’s. The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today congratulated the recipients.

“Known for our rich and vibrant culture, Newfoundland and Labrador boasts a wealth of talented artists who have made their mark locally, national and internationally, many of whom gained their first recognition through the Arts and Letters Awards program,” said Minister French. “With support of more than $47,000, our government is pleased to support the tremendous talent of our numerous professional artists, as well as those entering the industry. Congratulations to all the winners.”

Awards were presented in literary arts (including French), music, visual arts and digital multi-media (junior division). In the junior division, there were 36 winning entrants ages 12 to 18 and, in the senior division, there were 38 winning entrants. Overall, 611 entries were submitted.

“The Arts and Letters Awards provide a wonderful incentive for the province's residents to aspire to the highest standards in every artistic discipline,” said Paul Butler, Chair of the Arts and Letters Committee. “A truly open awards program, the Arts and Letters sees emerging artists rub shoulders in a blind-judged process with seasoned professionals. It has long been an important training ground for both new and established artists and remains a testament to our collective commitment to the arts.”

The Percy Janes First Novel Award, the event’s top prize of $1,500, was awarded to Mary Pike of St. John’s for her manuscript titled Never-Ever-Land. A detailed list of the award recipients can be viewed in the backgrounder below.

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future includes more than $17 million for the cultural and heritage sectors, bringing the total investment to $87 million since the launch of Creative Newfoundland and Labrador: The Blueprint for Development and Investment in Culture in 2006.
