Applicants Welcomed for Community Recreation Development Grant Program

Eligible communities looking to offset the cost of sport, recreation and active-living programming are welcome to apply for funding through the Provincial Government’s Community Recreation Development Grant Program. The deadline for applications for this year’s funding is May 9, 2013.

“The Provincial Government is committed to providing new opportunities for citizens of all ages to become more active and enjoy all the benefits that come with leading an active, healthy lifestyle,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “These grants support hundreds of community-based recreation programs that encourage physical activity and increased participation in sports, which is directly in line with the priorities outlined in our recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador, launched in 2007.”

The Community Recreation Development Grant Program is an application-based grant program which provides funding to communities of less than 6,000 people. This program has provided many opportunities for small communities to promote active living, as evidenced by the $572,000 that was distributed to over 180 communities throughout the province last year. For more information about the program and an application form, visit www.tcr.gov.nl.ca/tcr/formsandApplications/index.html#Recreation.  Applicants can also call 709-729-5281 or email: daviddoyle@gov.nl.ca

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $7.7 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the provincial sport and recreation strategy, approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
