The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Provincial Girls Ball Hockey Tournaments This Weekend

Three high school Provincial Girls Ball Hockey teams will be declared champions this weekend. Champions will be declared in Girls 2A, 3A and 4A Ball Hockey.

Ten teams will be competing in the Girls 2A Ball Hockey tournament, which is being hosted by Canon Richards Memorial in Flower’s Cove. Competing in Division A will be the host, Canon Richards Memorial, Valmont Academy (King’s Point), Cloud River Academy (Roddickton), Burgeo Academy, and St. Joseph’s Academy (Lamaline). Division B teams include French Shore Academy (Port Saunders), Labrador Straits Academy (L’Anse Au Loup), King Academy (Harbour Breton) Jane Collins Academy (Hare Bay) and Sheshatshiu Innu School. Games start at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday and are scheduled every hour until the last game at 9:00 p.m. Games begin again at 9:00 a.m. Friday. The banquet is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Friday. Cross over games begin at 9:00 a.m. Saturday with the championship game scheduled for 11:30 a.m.

The 3A Girls Ball Hockey is being hosted by Glovertown Academy. Competing in Division A is the host, Glovertown Academy, John Burke High (Grand Bank), Indian River High (Springdale) and Templeton Academy (Meadows). Division B teams include J. M. Olds Collegiate (Twillingate), Harriot Curtis Collegiate (St. Anthony), Roncalli Central High (Avondale) and Appalachia High (St. Georges). Games begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday and will continue all day. The banquet will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Games begin again at 9:00 a.m. Saturday with the cross overs being played at 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. The championship game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

Six teams will be competing in the Girls 4A Ball Hockey Provincial tournament being hosted by Ascension Collegiate in Bay Roberts. Schools competing in Division A include Mount Pearl Senior High, Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Happy Valley-Goose Bay) and Marystown Central High. Division B teams include the host, Ascension Collegiate, Queen Elizabeth Regional High (Conception Bay South) and Stephenville High. Games begin at 9:00 a.m. and will continue all day Friday until the 2:30 p.m. game. Cross over games will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and will continue into Saturday beginning at 9:00 a.m. The banquet is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The championship game is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to the gold and silver School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador (SSNL) medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. SSNL believes strongly in the values and principles of sportsmanship. In recognition of this, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams and officials vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship, as well. This team is awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
