New Climbing Wall for West Coast Community Centre

The West Rock Community Centre in Corner Brook will soon be home to a new rock climbing wall through the support of a $15,000 grant from the Provincial Government’s Community Capital Grant Program.

“This $15,000 grant will help provide youth in the community a new avenue to participate in physical and recreation activities,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “The Provincial Government’s support for this new rock wall supports one of the key directions of the province’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador, in that it supports recreation and sport infrastructure capacity.”

The West Rock Community Centre is among the many community-based organizations, municipalities, schools and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest capital grant program investments.

“I was pleased to support this important project from the start,” said Vaughn Granter, MHA for Humber West. “This rock climbing wall and associated equipment will enhance programs for youth of all ages attending West Rock Community Centre. It will challenge youth in the area to become physically active, and allow them to get fit in a fun, secure and safe environment.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $7.7 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of the provincial sport and recreation strategy, approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
