New Skate Park Announced for Bay Roberts

Young people in Bay Roberts and the surrounding area will soon enjoy a new skate park with the support from a $15,000 grant through the Provincial Government’s Community Capital Grant Program. The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, was in Bay Roberts today to make the announcement.

“A group of young people advocated for an off-street area that would provide a safe environment for skateboarding and bike activities,” said Minister French. “This new park will provide that venue, and create an opportunity for youth to engage in physical activity while improving their skill in a sport that continues to grow in popularity.”

The Town of Bay Roberts is among the many community-based organizations, municipalities, schools, and recreation commissions that have received funding to upgrade their recreation and sport infrastructure through these latest capital grant program investments.

“The new skate park will provide area youth with yet another opportunity to get out and enjoy outdoor activity,” said Glenn Littlejohn, MHA for Port de Grave. “This project is another fine example of how the Provincial Government partners with municipalities to promote recreation and healthy living.”

Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $7.7 million to support recreation and sport in the province. Since the launch of Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador: A Recreation and Sport Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador in 2007, approximately $172 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development throughout the province.
