The following is being distributed at the request of School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador:

Five Provincial Girls Basketball Tournaments This Weekend

Five high school provincial girls basketball teams will be declared champions this weekend.

Six teams will be competing in the Girls A Basketball tournament, which is being hosted by Lakewood Academy in Glenwood. Competing in the Gold Division are the host Lakewood Academy, St. Mary’s All Grade (Mary’s Harbour) and Fortune Bay Academy (St. Bernard’s). The Black Division teams include Stella Maris Academy (St. Brides), E.A.Butler All Grade (McKays) and Valmont Academy (King’s Point). Games begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, March 22, and continue until the last game at 5:00 p.m. Cross over games begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 with the championship game scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The 2A Girls Basketball Provincial is being hosted by Viking Trail Academy in Plum Point. Competing in Division A is the host, Viking Trail Academy, Bay d’Espoir Academy (Milltown) and Copper Ridge Academy (Baie Verte). Division B teams include Fogo Island Central High, St. Lawrence Academy and Baltimore School (Ferryland). Games begin at 9:00 a.m. Friday, March 22, and will continue all day with the final game beginning at 5:20 p.m. Cross over games begin at 9:00 a.m. and continue all day with the championship game scheduled for 5:00 p.m.

Five teams will be competing in the Girls 3A Basketball Provincial tournament being hosted by J. M. Olds Collegiate, in Twillingate. Schools competing in this event include J. M. Olds Collegiate, Indian River High (Springdale), Pasadena Academy, Roncalli High (Avondale) and Mobile High. Two games were played on Thursday, March 21, at 3:30 p.m and 5:30 p.m. Games continue all day Friday, March 22, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Regular games continue again at 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 and cross over games will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 23 followed by the championship game at 4:30 p.m.

Seven teams will be competing for the Provincial Girls 4A Tier 1 Basketball title hosted by Bishops College in St. John’s. Teams competing in the Red Division are the host, Bishops College, O’Donel High (Mount Pearl), Laval High (Placentia) and Mount Pearl Senior High. Teams in the White Division are Gonzaga High (St. John’s), Booth Memorial (St. John’s) and St. Kevin’s High (Goulds). Games begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 22. and will continue all day, Friday and Saturday, March 23, until the last game at 3:00 p.m. Cross over games are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and 9:00 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. on Sunday, March 24. The championship game is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Six teams will be competing for the Provincial Girls 4A Tier 2 Basketball title hosted by Stephenville High. Teams competing in Division A are Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John’s), Clarenville High and Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor). Division B teams include the host, Stephenville High, Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Happy Valley-Goose Bay) and Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts). Games begin at 8:30 a.m. Friday, March 22, and will continue all day Friday. Cross over games will begin on Saturday, March 23, at 9:00 a.m. The championship game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 23.

In addition to the gold and silver SSNL medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. SSNL believes strongly in the values and principles of sportsmanship. In recognition of this, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams and officials vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship, as well. This team is awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
