Applications Welcomed for Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Program

Aboriginal groups throughout the province are encouraged to apply to the Provincial Government’s Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Program before the program deadline of April 15, 2013.

“The Provincial Government is committed to helping Aboriginal groups preserve and protect their culture and heritage,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “Over the past five years, this program has provided funding for numerous initiatives that celebrate and sustain the practices and culture of Aboriginal people in Newfoundland and Labrador, and I look forward to seeing more initiatives this year.”

This program supports eligible applicants in the safeguarding of many aspects of Aboriginal traditions and culture, including language; traditional knowledge and skills; storytelling, music, games and other pastimes; customs; cultural beliefs, and food customs.

“Aboriginal people throughout our province have rich and varied cultures and traditions,” said the Honourable Felix Collins, Minister for Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs. “It is important that we support initiatives aimed at preserving and promoting these cultures and traditions, as they contribute greatly to the overall social and cultural fabric of Newfoundland and Labrador.”

Successful applicants may receive up to $15,000 for projects that document, pass on, and celebrate cultural traditions. For short-term events that recognize traditional culture, a grant of up to $1,000 is available. Applications are reviewed by the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from Aboriginal groups.
