School Sports Newfoundland and Labrador Holding Five
Provincial Boys Basketball Tournaments This Weekend

Five high school provincial boys basketball teams will be declared division champions this weekend.

Five teams will be competing in the Boys A Basketball tournament, which is being hosted by Swift Current All Grade. Competing in Division A are the host, Swift Current All Grade, Christ the King School (Rushoon), and Valmont Academy (Kings Point). Division B teams include Holy Name of Mary High (Lawn), Bayside Academy (Port Hope Simpson) and Lakewood Academy (Glenwood). Games begin at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 14, and will continue all day Friday, March 15, with the skills competition scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Cross over games begin at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and will continue starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 16, with the championship game following at 1:00 p.m.

The 2A Boys Basketball Provincial is being hosted by St. Lawrence Academy. Competing in the Blue Division is the host, St. Lawrence Academy, Dunne Academy (St. Mary’s), Smallwood Academy (Gambo) and Copper Ridge Academy (Baie Verte). The White Division teams include Viking Trail Academy (Plum Point), Tricentia Academy (Arnolds Cove), Belanger Memorial (McKays) and Bay D’Espoir Academy (Milltown). Games begin at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 14, and continue all day on Friday, March 15, beginning at 9:00 a.m. Cross over games are scheduled for 9:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. followed by the championship game at 1:30 p.m.

Six teams will be competing in the Boys 3A Basketball Provincial tournament being hosted by St. James Regional High, Port aux Basques. Competing in Division A include the host, St. James Regional High, Fatima Academy (St. Brides) and Pearson Memorial (Wesleyville). Division B teams include Mobile High, Templeton Academy (Meadows) and Pasadena Academy. Round robin games begin at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 15, and will continue all day. A banquet is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. followed by a skills competition at 9:00 p.m. Cross over games begin on Saturday, March 16, at 9:00 a.m. followed by the championship game at 5:30 p.m.

Eight teams will be competing for the Provincial Boys 4A Tier 1 Basketball title hosted by Gonzaga High in St. John’s. Teams competing in the White Division are the host, Gonzaga High, Booth Memorial (St. John’s), Holy Heart of Mary High (St. John’s) and O’Donel High (Mount Pearl). Teams in the Blue Division are Corner Brook Regional High, Mount Pearl Senior High, Bishops College (St. John’s) and St. Catherine’s Academy (Mount Carmel). Games begin at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, March 14, and will continue all day Friday, March 15, and will continue until 2:15 on Saturday, March 16. Cross overs will take place at 6:00 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. on Saturday evening. The championship game is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, March 17.

Eight teams will be competing for the Provincial Boys 4A Tier 2 Basketball title hosted by Elwood High in Deer Lake. Teams competing in the Red Division are the host, Elwood High, Prince of Wales Collegiate (St. John’s), Exploits Valley High (Grand Falls-Windsor) and Ascension Collegiate (Bay Roberts). Competing in the Blue Division are Clarenville High, Holy Spirit High (Manuels), Mealy Mountain Collegiate (Happy Valley-Goose Bay) and Stephenville High. Games begin at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, March 14, and will continue all day Friday, March 15. A skills competition is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Friday followed by the banquet at 8:00 p.m. Round robin games will continue on Saturday, March 16 at 9:00 a.m. Cross overs will take place at 12:30 p.m. and 2:15 p.m. on Saturday. The championship game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

In addition to the gold and silver School Sport Newfoundland and Labrador (SSNL) medals, a championship banner will be awarded to the winning team. SSNL believes strongly in the values and principles of Sportsmanship. In recognition of this, an individual sportsmanship medal will be presented to one deserving person from each team. All teams and officials vote to recognize a team who has displayed great sportsmanship, as well. This team is awarded the Team Sportsmanship Banner.
