Minister Congratulates Josh Hancott for Powerlifting Record

The Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today extended congratulations to 19 year-old St. John’s native Josh Hancott for setting a new world record in his age and weight class for powerlifting.

“I have learned this extraordinary young man has already broken 18 national records and one world record, and in the process established a new standard of excellence for young weightlifters around the world,” said Minister French. “I feel I can speak for other Newfoundlanders and Labradorians when I say that Josh is a fine example of the talent, drive, and determination you see among the youth of this province, and I congratulate him for what he has achieved.”

The impressive young athlete set the record by squatting a total of 529 pounds at The Raw Challenge, a U.S. powerlifting competition that was created by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“I understand that Josh hopes to represent Canada at the International Powerlifting Federation world championships next year,” said Minister French. “I wish him all the best as he pursues what should be a very successful career in powerlifting.”
