More Than $2 Million Invested in Sport Development Throughout the Province

Athletes across Newfoundland and Labrador benefited from more than $2 million from the Provincial Government to enhance competition and advance sports throughout in 2012-13. As part of that investment, the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, today announced that $75,000 has been provided to Coaching NL to support enhanced training opportunities and an upgraded online presence for the organization.

“The work done by Coaching NL is vital, as it ensures a high caliber of instruction and training for provincial athletes at all levels of their development,” said Minister French. “This funding will help pay for brand and website development, a series of coaching courses, and sport learning facilitator workshops, all in an effort to improve the delivery of quality programs and services.”

The Provincial Government supports recreation and sport by providing funding to provincial sports organizations. This includes funding for regional games, the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, and the Canada Games; support for athlete travel; scholarships and bursaries delivered through the annual Premier’s Athletic Awards, as well as the funding provided to Coaching NL.

“This funding will help us advance coaching development, recognize coaching excellence, and provide quality programs and services to Newfoundland and Labrador coaches at all levels,” said Bill Taggart, Coaching Coordinator of Coaching NL. “We appreciate the partnership that the Provincial Government maintains with provincial sports organizations, as our collaboration continues to positively impact sports in this province.”

Since the release of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development in Newfoundland and Labrador.
