More Than $170,000 Invested to Help Provincial Sport Organizations Host Events
The Provincial Government is providing more than $170,000 to support provincial sport organizations hosting eastern Canadian, national, and international events. As part of this funding, the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation, announced $10,000 to support Gymnastics NL as it hosts the Eastern Canadian Championships in St. John’s in May.
“This government has always been committed to providing support for sport and recreational opportunities that develop athletes and enhance the well-being of participants,” said Minister French. “Our province is a tremendous stage for such events, and our athletes deserve every opportunity to compete against the very best in their respective sports.”
The Provincial Government’s hosting grants to provincial sports organizations have created opportunities for provincial athletes to compete with skilled athletes outside of Newfoundland and Labrador in a wide variety of sports, which in turn provides them with greater experience and enhanced athletic development.
“We have very talented athletes in this province, and this funding provides the opportunity to show what they can do against top competition,” said Carol White, Executive Director, Gymnastics Newfoundland and Labrador. “We appreciate the support of the Provincial Government, and we invite everyone to come out and watch our athletes at the Eastern Canadian Championships from May 9 to May 11.”
Since the release of the Provincial Government’s recreation and sport strategy, Active, Healthy Newfoundland and Labrador (2007), more than $70 million has been committed to recreational and sport infrastructure, programming, and athlete development in Newfoundland and Labrador.
