$127,500 in Capital Grants to Benefit Local Athletes
A total of 17 provincial organizations will benefit from new sports equipment through a Provincial Government investment of $127,500 from the Provincial Sport Organization Capital Grant Program.
“This program helps us maximize sport and recreational activity by investing in the equipment and facilities that are needed to run athletic programs,” said the Honourable Terry French, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Recreation. “People involved in many different activities have benefited from this program, which has enhanced existing recreation facilities throughout the province and also helped to develop new facilities.”
Capital grants are available up to $10,000, which were used this year to purchase equipment including youth soccer nets; gymnastics bars and beams; posts, pads and balls for rugby; sailing dinghies, and an adaptive climbing wall. One of the groups to receive funding was Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador, a non-profit organization serving over 500 people with intellectual disabilities.
“We are very pleased and grateful to receive funding to expand our Young Athletes program to include FUNdamental movement patterns,” said Trish Williams, Executive Director, Special Olympics Newfoundland and Labrador. “This funding supports another opportunity to create inclusion in sport for youth with disabilities, and we look forward to seeing many young people benefit.”
A complete list of all projects funded through this program for 2012-13 can be found in the backgrounder below.
