Families and Communities Encouraged to Practice Safe Holiday Shopping

Minister Shares Tips for Safe, Smart Holiday Shopping

There are a number of measures Newfoundlanders and Labradorians can take to ensure safe, smart holiday shopping.

“As the holiday season approaches and we are doing more shopping, it’s important to stay informed about retailers’ return policies and to safeguard against fraud, especially when shopping online.  This government aims to help consumers make informed shopping decisions for the well-being of their families.”
- The Honourable Dan Crummell, Minister of Service NL

Return policies vary widely from store to store, and it is important to be familiar with retailer policies to avoid potential confusion and inconvenience. Shoppers should take note of any related store signage and confirm the details of the retailer’s policies at the point of sale.

Consumers are also encouraged to exercise the same level of diligence when shopping online. Verify that the transmission of any personal information including credit card details during online purchasing is encrypted and that the vendor is in good standing with the Better Business Bureau.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
