Point au Mal Man Sentenced for Public Safety Violations

Service NL announced today that a 52-year-old man from Point au Mal was sentenced Thursday, October 10, in Stephenville Provincial Court upon pleading guilty to violations of the Public Safety Act and Electrical Regulations. The case arose as the result of an investigation by the Western Regional Government Service Centre (GSC) of Service NL in Corner Brook.

In May 2013, the Western Region GSC investigated electrical work conducted on a new addition of a porch and a garage to a private residence in the community of Point au Mal. The investigation identified the person responsible and a charge was laid under section 36(1)(a) of the Public Safety Act for an unqualified person doing electrical work.

The individual pleaded guilty to the charge and was ordered to pay $300 in fines. It was acknowledged in court that, once the investigation started, the individual hired a qualified electrical contractor to do the work and paid for the $50 permit plus the labour.

Service NL advises the public that every qualified electrician conducting electrical work in the province is required to be registered with Service NL and will have a registration card containing their registration number. Information on registered contractors can be found at www.servicenl.gov.nl.ca/licenses/electrical/index.html.
