Birth, Marriage and Death Certificates Now Available Online

Applying for birth, marriage and death certificates is now easier and more convenient with the launch of a new online ordering service. Previously, applications could only be submitted in person at a Government Service Centre or by fax or mail. The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Service NL, demonstrated the new Vital Statistics Online Services at a news conference today.

“We are pleased to now offer a more accessible service, especially when it involves such important life events,” said Minister McGrath. “We are confident that this new service option will have a positive impact on people’s dealings with government for this necessary service. Anyone who needs to obtain a birth, marriage or death certificate can now do so at their own convenience from home or any location with Internet access.”

Individuals can apply and pay for certificates through the Service NL website at www.servicenl.gov.nl.ca/vitalstats. Payment is accepted by Visa, MasterCard or Interac Online. All certificates cost $20, with the exception of death certificates, which are free for up to one year after the date of death. Once the transaction is complete, individuals will also be able to check online the following business day for the status of their order. Orders should be processed within three business days. Certificates will be sent to the applicant via regular mail or can be sent by courier for an additional fee.

Vital Statistics Online Services are part of the Provincial Government’s commitment to provide enhanced access to services through online channels in addition to regular service offerings, where possible.

“As a government, it is incumbent on us to make information of interest to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians readily available,” said the Honourable Keith Hutchings, Minister Responsible for the Office of Public Engagement. “This latest initiative offered through Service NL is another way of connecting citizens with the Provincial Government, its agencies and departments in meaningful and innovative ways.”

Individuals with questions about Vital Statistics Online Services can call the Vital Statistics Division, toll-free at 1-855-729-3380.

Service NL also offers a number of other electronic services to the public, including vehicle registration renewals, payments for road driving tests and Companies and Deeds Online. These services are found at www.servicenl.gov.nl.ca/online_services/online_services.html
