Proper Scaffolding Installation Saves Lives and Reduces Injuries on the Job

Many of the construction sites currently in the province involve working from heights and such activity requires the use of scaffolding. The Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Service NL, was at the Carpenters Millwright College today to attend a demonstration of how to safely install scaffolding systems.

“We have found over the last few years that not all scaffolding is being installed according to Occupational Health and Safety Regulations or to manufacturer’s instructions, thereby creating unsafe workplaces,” said Minister McGrath. “Using this equipment correctly is vitally important for both employees and employers. One mistake could result in a serious injury, or worse, at the work site.”

The Occupational Health and Safety Regulations require an employer to provide a safe working platform, as well as a safe and convenient means of access when working at heights. Scaffolding should be installed by experienced scaffolders to ensure it is erected, altered, or dismantled properly. Scaffolds erected or altered by people without sufficient knowledge or experience may be dangerous and unsafe.

Since January 1, the Occupational Health and Safety Division has issued over 146 orders to employers and employees for non-compliance with scaffolding requirements under the Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.

“Occupational Health and Safety Officers often see examples of poorly installed scaffolding not just at large work sites but also small work sites,” said Minister McGrath. “We are also aware of homeowners opting to rent and install scaffolding on their own for home repair. If they decide to take this option then they should ensure that all components necessary for safe erection of scaffolding are included in their rental package. However, I would strongly encourage anyone needing to use scaffolding, to have it installed by a qualified and experienced scaffolder to ensure optimal safety.”
