Roadcheck 2013 Raises Awareness of Commercial Vehicle Safety

Enforcement officers will be out in full force this week participating in a road check blitz for commercial vehicles. Roadcheck 2013 starts today (Tuesday, June 4) and runs through to Thursday, June 6. Highway enforcement officers from the Motor Registration Division will be conducting commercial vehicle road safety checks and inspections in an effort to raise awareness of safe practices. Officers will be checking for mechanical deficiencies, driver records, cargo securement and compliance with legislation.

“Our first priority is to ensure that our roads and highways are safe for all users,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Service NL. “Roadcheck provides us with a great opportunity to raise awareness among commercial vehicle traffic about safe driving practices and the need for full compliance with provincial and national laws.”

Roadcheck 2013 is an initiative of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and represents a major undertaking by vehicle safety enforcement personnel across Canada, the United States and Mexico. All three countries participate in the annual initiative. Further information on CVSA and Roadcheck 2013 is contained in the backgrounder below.

Service NL is responsible for ensuring that commercial traffic using the province’s roads and highways comply with weight and dimension regulations, are being operated by qualified and safe drivers, and that the vehicles transporting cargo and passengers in this province are mechanically fit and comply with federal and provincial legislation. These roadside inspections of commercial vehicles are conducted in accordance with nationally developed inspection criteria.

“Roadcheck is a great demonstration of the on-going commitment by governments across North America to enhancing safety on our roads,” said Minister McGrath. “While our enforcement officials are out there daily to ensure commercial vehicles are operating safely, Newfoundland and Labrador is proud to participate in this special initiative on an annual basis to raise awareness of the importance of commercial vehicle safety.”

BACKGROUNDER

Roadcheck 2013 Raises Awareness of Commercial Vehicle Safety

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance is recognized as the international authority on commercial motor vehicle safety and security. It is an international not-for-profit organization comprising local, state, provincial, territorial and federal motor carrier safety officials and industry representatives from the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Its mandate is to promote commercial motor vehicle safety and security by providing leadership to enforcement agencies, industry participants and policy makers.

In addition to inspections and enforcement, Roadcheck 2013 also presents an invaluable opportunity to gather road safety data on a large scale. This data allows officials to identify trending areas of concern, and as well to provide a point of reference for measuring the effectiveness of existing safety initiatives, inspection standards and enforcement measures.
