Budget 2013 Reconfirms Commitment Made to Seniors

The Provincial Government recognizes the valuable contributions of seniors and is making strategic investments that support seniors in their daily activities. Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future provides $3 million to continue a 35 per cent reduction on driver’s licence and vehicle registration fees for seniors 65 years and older. In addition to these motor vehicle-related fee reductions, the Provincial Government is also continuing a reduction in fees for seniors for activities such as fishing, hunting, camping and wood cutting.

“It is important that seniors are supported in their ability to remain independent and that efforts are made to improve their overall quality of life,” said the Honourable Nick McGrath, Minister of Service NL. “We are listening to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and are providing services that matter to them. This investment supports key priorities of our government and of the people of Newfoundland and Labrador – our families, towns and communities.”

Vehicle registration fees for seniors are now $91, and driver’s licence fees will continue to be $65, reduced from the regular rates of $140 and $100, respectively. Fees under the Department of Environment and Conservation range from $6.50 for a trapping licence to seasonal fees for serviced campsites of approximately $1,390, reduced from regular rates of $10 and $2,139 respectively. For a full list of fee reductions, please see the backgrounder below.

“Everything we can do as a government to assist seniors financially goes a long way toward enhancing their overall day-to-day well-being,” said the Honourable Tom Hedderson, Minister of Environment and Conservation. “Staying active and independent leads to a healthier and more fulfilling life, and we believe our seniors deserve the support it takes to help them achieve that.”

Budget 2013, through these fee reductions, is furthering the goals of the Provincial Healthy Aging Policy Framework which aims to recognize older persons, celebrate diversity, support communities, encourage health and financial well-being, and support employment, education and research.
