Minister Commends Energy Access Agreement

The Provincial Government welcomes the Energy Access Agreement between Nalcor, Emera, and Nova Scotia Power which has facilitated today’s Maritime Link compliance filing with the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board (UARB).

“This is a positive agreement for the provinces,” said the Honourable Derrick Dalley, Minister of Natural Resources. “We have agreed to make power available to the Nova Scotia market that is surplus to our needs, and in return, Nova Scotia has an opportunity to meet their power demand at fair market prices. This meets the UARB requirement for access to more power while providing additional value for Newfoundland and Labrador. This agreement further supports our long held position that there is significant demand for our surplus power.”

The Maritime Link will allow hydroelectric power to be delivered from Cape Ray, Newfoundland and Labrador, through 180-kilometre subsea cables system to an area near Point Aconi in Cape Breton, thereby enhancing the reliability of the power system in the province.

The Muskrat Falls Project is being developed to meet the growing electricity needs in Newfoundland and Labrador. It is the lowest-cost option to provide long-term, stable electricity for customers in the province.
