Grade 5 Poster Contest Entries Illustrate Trees are Terrific

From campfires to camping, hiking to tree planting, Grade 5 students from around the province got creative when submitting posters to the annual contest to celebrate this province’s forests as part of National Forest Week happening September 22 to 28.

“It’s always interesting to see what our young people think of their surroundings and especially the forest, which in many cases is a big part of their lives and the lives of their families,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. “The economic, social and cultural role the forest plays in our communities is evident in their colourful and thought-provoking work.”

A provincial winner and three regional winners of the poster contest have been selected and will be recognized during National Forest Week. Judging was based on originality, creativity and adherence to the theme Trees Are Terrific.

The provincial winner is Alyson Thomas, a student at Labrador Straits Academy, located in L’Anse au Loup. She will receive an Apple iPad and her class will be offered a field trip with forestry staff during National Forest Week. In addition, Labrador Straits Academy will receive a new computer system.

Regional winners are Minda Harms, a student at Newton Elementary, located in Newton, Eastern region; Abby Hynes, St. Peter’s Academy, Benoit’s Cove, Western region; and Breanna Normore, Labrador Straits Academy, Labrador region. Each regional winner will receive an Apple iPod and a framed version of their poster.

Twelve entries from the contest will be featured on the 2014 National Forestry Week calendar.

National Forest Week will be celebrated in many municipalities throughout the country where the forest is used for wood harvesting, lumber production, and pulp and paper manufacturing. In addition to recognizing the winners of the poster contest, tree-planting ceremonies and presentations to school-age children are among the activities planned to mark the week.
