Farm Field Day Encourages Residents to Come Down to the Farm
To learn more about Newfoundland and Labrador’s agriculture industry,
residents are encouraged to take part in Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s
annual Farm Field Day on Saturday, August 10. The event will take place in
St. John’s at the Atlantic Cool Climate Crop Research Centre on Brookfield
Road from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
“Science and innovation have brought real results for our farmers, consumers
and the economy,” said federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. “The Farm
Field Day is a great opportunity to learn more about the science and the
partnerships that help the agriculture sector produce healthier, safer, and
higher quality food in a sustainable manner for all Canadians.”
Farm Field Day will feature numerous agricultural research displays,
different types of farm equipment, and tractor tours of the research grounds
will be available to visitors. Children will have the opportunity to learn
about and interact with a variety of farm animals, as well as enjoy other
activities such as tractor rides and face painting. Admission is free.
“Newfoundland and Labrador’s agriculture industry is a significant
contributor to the economy of rural communities throughout the province with
sales valued at $500 million a year,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall,
Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and
Agrifoods Agency. “Farm Field Day is an opportunity for people to learn
about the industry and the important benefits it provides to the province. I
encourage residents to come out and take part in the activities planned for
the day.”
The local agriculture industry continues to grow and diversify with annual
farms revenues totaling upwards of $125 million. The industry generates
direct and indirect employment for approximately 5,000 men and women in the
rural communities of Newfoundland and Labrador.
