Residents Encouraged to Purchase Local Produce

Summertime provides the perfect opportunity to sample and purchase the many varieties of fresh, locally-grown produce available in Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Our farmers grow a tremendous variety of vegetables and fruits that are available to consumers who want fresh, locally-grown produce,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. “At farms, U-picks, grocery stores, and farmers’ markets, local products are available for purchase within days of being harvested.”

Locally-grown produce can be found at various locations across the province and seasonally in grocery stores. Many vendors set up roadside stands. Food producers in Canada adhere to strict safety regulations. In this province, the products available locally vary with the season and range from root crops like potatoes and carrots to strawberries and blueberries.

Purchasing local produce increases awareness of local food availability, supports local business and promotes sustainable lifestyle alternatives. It also offers consumers the chance to connect with local farmers who are supporting and growing the provincial economy.

The local agriculture industry is continually developing and diversifying with annual farm revenues totaling upwards of $125 million. The industry generates direct and indirect employment for approximately 5,000 men and women in the rural communities of Newfoundland and Labrador.
