Mining Conference Showcases Industry Developments and Partnerships
Mining is powering growth and investment on the Baie Verte Peninsula and throughout Newfoundland and Labrador. This was highlighted over the weekend at the 26th Annual Mining Conference organized by the Baie Verte and Area Chamber of Commerce. The Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Natural Resources, spoke at the event on Friday evening.
“Mines based in the rural communities of our province play a huge role in securing economic and employment benefits and Baie Verte and the surrounding area is a shining example of this,” said Minister Marshall. “While in the Baie Verte area, I toured mines sites – both active and abandoned - and met with suppliers in the industry from Springdale to Baie Verte. I was impressed by the professional work being undertaken. Mines employ workers from their communities, take care of their environment in which they operate, and create a business environment for supplier companies throughout the region. As well, junior companies play a crucial role in sustaining smaller operations in rural communities throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.”
Mining Industry NL, an association that represents all sectors of the mineral industry in Newfoundland and Labrador, participated in the conference.
“The annual Baie Verte Mining Conference provides a unique networking opportunity for our members to discuss their projects and showcase the province’s extensive mineral potential,” said Ed Moriarity, Executive Director, Mining Industry NL. “Our association extends its thanks to the Baie Verte and Area Chamber of Commerce, local businesses and the many residents who volunteered to make this such a successful event.”
The MHA for Baie Verte-Springdale, Kevin Pollard, also attended the event.
“This conference which has been running for 26 successive years, is a testament to the hard work and dedication of local volunteers," said MHA Pollard. “I applaud the outstanding efforts of the town of Baie Verte, the host committee, and the Chamber of Commerce.”
In Budget 2013: A Sound Plan, A Secure Future, the Provincial Government provided funding of $1.9 million to maintain the Mineral Incentive Program which provides financial support to junior exploration companies and prospectors in the province.
The mining industry is making a major contribution to the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador with expected annual mineral shipments in 2013 of $4.9 billion.
