National Forest Week Contest Recognizes Trees Are Terrific

To celebrate National Forest Week, September 22 to 28, the Department of Natural Resources is once again inviting Grade 5 students to participate in a province-wide annual poster contest.

The theme for 2013, Trees are Terrific, is intended to highlight the important role of trees in the daily lives of residents in the province. Forests provide areas for hunting, fishing, hiking, and other outdoor pursuits while also ensuring a sustainable economy for Newfoundland and Labrador.

“Every year, Grade 5 students use their talent and their imagination to tell us how they view our forests,” said the Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Natural Resources and Minister Responsible for the Forestry and Agrifoods Agency. “Trees play an important role in all our lives, economically, socially and culturally. It will be interesting to see their submissions for this year’s contest.”

A provincial winner will be selected from the poster entries and will receive an Apple iPad. Students in the provincial winner’s class will be offered a field trip with forestry staff during National Forest Week and a new computer for their classroom.

In addition, the contest will name three regional winners from the eastern, western and Labrador regions of the province. Each regional winner will receive an Apple iPod and a framed copy of their poster. Twelve entries from the poster contest will be featured in the 2014 National Forestry Week calendar.

Entries will be judged based on originality, creativity and adherence to the theme. Entries must be postmarked by Friday, June 14. For complete details, contest rules and contact information, please visit www.gov.nl.ca/nr/forestry/index.html#2
