Newfoundland and Labrador Celebrates Oil & Gas Week 2013

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Natural Resources, joined representatives from industry and academia at the official launch and opening reception for Oil & Gas Week this morning at the Marine Institute in St. John’s.

“Oil & Gas Week celebrates the importance of the industry in the province,” said Minister Marshall. “The provincial oil and gas industry has generated long-term business and employment opportunities and Oil & Gas Week provides an opportunity to come together with partners to acknowledge the economic and employment benefits it provides to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.”

Oil & Gas Week will run until Friday, March 1. Events scheduled for the week include an industry sponsored food drive and fundraiser, a career trade show, a geoscience seminar and the annual Outstanding Contribution Award Gala hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Oil & Gas Industries Association (Noia).

“This annual event - now in its 11th year - provides our industry an opportunity to celebrate its successes and let our young people know that there are tremendous opportunities to work with us, in interesting, rewarding careers, here in our home province,” said Rob Strong, Chair of the 2013 Oil & Gas Week Steering Committee.

A key focus of Oil & Gas Week is to inform secondary and post-secondary students about potential career opportunities. Energy Day - Exploring Careers in Oil and Gas will be held tomorrow (Tuesday, February 26) at the Johnson GEO CENTRE. The purpose of the tradeshow is to introduce students to the industry and the wide range of available careers.

“The oil and gas industry provides Newfoundlanders and Labradorians, especially our young people, with the opportunity to establish successful careers right here at home,” said Minister Marshall. “I wholeheartedly encourage students to participate in the events planned for the week to learn more about the oil and gas industry.”
