Supporting Strong and Vibrant Communities

Municipal Leaders Presented with Long Service Awards

Municipal leaders make a tremendous contribution to the development of strong communities across Newfoundland and Labrador. Through their vision and drive, residents have access to improved services and facilities which make communities better places to live and raise families. The Department of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, through the Long Service Awards, recognizes significant milestones in community service. This year’s ceremony was held during the Municipalities Newfoundland and Labrador Convention.

“I would like to thank all of our municipal leaders across the province for the important role they play in enhancing their communities each and every day. As I learned from my time in municipal politics, offering your time as a councillor is both a demanding and rewarding experience. These awards recognize significant contributions to municipal governance, and I commend these award winners for their diligent service.”
- The Honourable Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs

Since the launch of the awards program 1983, the Department of Municipal and Intergovernmental Affairs, on behalf of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, has presented long service awards to mayors, deputy mayors and councillors in recognition of their contributions to both their individual communities and to municipal government in the province.

Long service awards for 54 individuals were presented at this year’s annual awards banquet. A full list of award recipients is included in the attached backgrounder. Two individuals reached the 35-year milestone - Calvin Samms from the Town of Howley and Bertha Genge from the Town of Flower’s Cove. They were acknowledged during the event for their longstanding service to residents in their respective communities.

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is committed to supporting important social programs, strong communities and the health and well-being of children, families and seniors.
